With the Rome Aerials Gymnastics Program soaring to new heights each year, registration for classes and special events is ongoing for the gymnastics programs offered at the Rome-Floyd Parks and Recreation Authority.

Discovery Gymnastics, a program designed for special needs children, will take place Thursdays from Aug. 6 through Aug. 27 from 4:15-5:00 p.m. with an overall fee of $35.

In its second year, Discovery Gymnastics helps to instill life and developmental skills in special needs children by giving them a safe atmosphere in which they can learn and explore.

“It’s a sensory-rich environment that’s great for letting kids develop skills at their own paces,” said Sarah Grimes, Gymnastics Coordinator for RFPRA. “It’s a different approach than, say, organized sports. They can work one-on-one with an instructor and try things they wouldn’t be able to do in their gyms at school.”

Rome Aerials also offers Back Handspring Clinics once a month from August to November, to help gymnasts learn the basics of the back handspring or to improve on already existing skills. The clinics are for kids ages 7 and older and cost $20. Clinic dates are August 21, September 18, October 16 and November 20 from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Space is limited to 20 participants.

The Winter Blast Open House showcase for all gymnasts enrolled in December classes will be on Friday, December 12 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. The Winter Blast offers a chance for Gymnasts to show off their skills at different event stations. The cost is $5 per enrolled gymnast.

Tot Time is ongoing at Rome Aerials Gymnastics Program on Tuesdays and Thursdays from noon to 2 p.m. and Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to noon. Ages include walking toddlers to 5 years and the cost is $4 per visit. All toddlers must be accompanied and supervised by an adult at all times.

Open Gym – limited to 60 participants – is each Friday night from 6:30 to 8:30 and costs $6 for gymnasts ages 6 and older.
