RFPRD announces Rome Select Baseball League

This Spring season, a new select baseball league will be stealing bases around the diamond, announced Rome-Floyd Parks and Recreation Sports officials on Thursday.

RSB2016Rome Select Baseball, a league created to satisfy demand for a higher level of competition among youth athletes, will offer players the chance to experience a more rigorous aspect of the game without necessarily having to seek to enroll in travel baseball, said Lee Morris, a sports coordinator at Rome-Floyd Parks and Recreation.

“Youth baseball participants that wanted to play in a league with higher levels of competition have had to travel on weekends to seek out that level of play,” Morris explained.

“Now we offer Rome Select Baseball, or RSB, a local league that will play during the week. This will allow them to both travel and play in a competitive league at a competitive price rather than exclusively playing in travel baseball,” Morris added.

Rome Select Baseball is different than spring recreation baseball, Morris said in that coaches and players can build their own teams with kids from anywhere, which is different from the Spring League that requires that the teams form based on players’ school districts.

The registration process for RSB remains the same as for the Spring League, Morris said.

“All youth baseball players will sign up at the Rome-Floyd Parks and Recreation Department as they normally would, no matter which league they intend on participating in,” he said. “RSB rosters are due approximately 10 days prior to the formation of the traditional school league.  Any players not selected to play in RSB will then be placed on their traditional school teams.”

Registration dates for both Spring Baseball and Rome Select Baseball are Feb. 1 – Feb. 7 for early registration ($65), Feb. 8 – March 4 for regular registration ($75) and $90 for late registration, which begins on March 5.

Registration can be completed online at RFPRA.com or by signing up at Parks and Recreation Administrative Headquarters at 1 Shorter Ave.
