RFPRD to honor Brian McGraw with tree dedication

This Friday, the Rome-Floyd Parks and Recreation Department will honor a former employee, Brian McGraw who passed away from cancer in July of 2014.

An Autumn Blaze Maple tree will be dedicated to McGraw, whose family and coworkers will be present for the ceremony at 3 p.m. at the Parks Department located at 170 North Ave. The public is also invited to attend.

BrianMcGrawDedication_socialmediaMcGraw worked in the Parks and Recreation field for nearly 30 years. For 20 years, he worked for the city of Dunedin, Fla. before joining the Rome-Floyd Parks and Recreation family in December of 2005.

“Brian was a very dedicated and hardworking employee,” said Parks Superintendent Todd Wofford, adding that at first, McGraw was hired as a crew leader, but quickly moved up the ladder to Division Supervisor.

“Brian was a joy to work with,” Wofford said. “He always figured out how to get things done in a safe and correct manner. I have had, and currently have, some great employees, but Brian was the best.”

McGraw was named Employee of the Year in both 2006 and 2013, and Wofford said his passion for Parks and Recreation was unparalleled.

“I consider it an honor to have known him and worked with him. Very few days go by that I don’t think of him,” Wofford said.

McGraw was a father of six and his fiancé at the time of his passing, Laura Junkins Rogers, described him as a ‘gentle giant’.

“Brian was the most caring, kind, loving, peaceful, beautiful person,” Rogers said. “He was a wonderful partner, father, son, brother, and friend. He truly cared for everyone in his life and always looked to the bright side of things. He is truly missed and always and forever in our hearts.”

A tree dedication, Wofford said, is the perfect way to honor McGraw’s memory.

“Brian loved trees and I felt like this is a great way to honor him so that we can look out our window and remember him,” he said.
